Thanks Suzi,I appreciate that!I"ll look forward to your work too,but don"t feel pressed-it takes time.I have been working on one of Catherine Eddowes meeting with a "stranger" a week before the double event -so far so good -[except that its
a bit dubious that she ever did ofcourse!]

Berner’s Street Club

I love this, Nathalie.
The chink in the lower window attempts to give us a rare glimpse into the motive of Jack - surely that’s his wraith drifting along the wall? Though he could be a she, a trannie, waltzing into the ghost life of the leaden sky that shields the painting and sheds no tears above the powerful chimneys that could be deadly howitzers threatening to pound the skyline of London to hell and back, or could they be a group of dispossessed souls, like seven dead whores waiting on the roof for a lift to heaven from Peter Pan? -
There is a half open door on the lower floor and we might see Jack ascend or descend the stairs - like a fair ground ride almost - and he is so caught in the lamplight that he is the lamplight, his hat the shade and his dark coat a chandelier of pure hate.
On the second floor we see the whores and the dancing drunken men.
This is the bit we know.
But when we climb the next floor - for there are three - the curtains are closed again. We see but a small chink of light.
Yeah, we don’t know how or why he did it.
First floor. Prelude.
We know exactly what he did. Second floor. Crime.
Third floor. Complete and utter darkness. We do not understand what he did.
I’m climbing those stairs.
Beautiful piece of art, Nathalie.

Thankyou AP...you are kind and I am glad you like "Berner Street".
I never thought of the dancers as "whores" though.
The lady outside standing with her back to the light-she is Elizabeth Stride---or supposed to be!
The women are the girlfriends and wives of the "working men" or better the "East End Radicals
and Socialists" from the Berner st club.
But.....the painting can indeed be whatever works for you and for me the painting soothed me as I did it because I thought that at least some people knew how to enjoy themselves and defend themselves from the poverty and so on and I wished as I did it that they would have invited Elizabeth into their world that night.
But AP I love whatever you write about the paintings because your words act like a catalyst to my imagination and I am very grateful for that!

Hi,

I think I've sussed it out now. Stephen is going to think I'm a crackpot, but I'll know next time. Sorry If I've messed up the system. I'll be good I promise!

Here's Liz Stride, I hope!

Yes!!!!

Thank goodness for that! This is a pic of Liz Stride, made up from contemporary illustrations and the mortuary photo. Because it's so low resolution it's a bit blurry, but it's a bit more flattering than the terrible sketches, which make her look very masculine. I've corrected the mouth deformation, because I think that was probably post mortem. I've got Polly and Annie to post, still struggling with Catharine and Mary.

Wonderful, Jane! I nearly jumped out of my chair when I saw that!

Can you also post them on the thread for each victim? (This is just in case I forget where to find them since I know I'm going to want to come back to them often).

Hi,
thanks for the feedback. I have totally no confidence and it all helps. Can I ask for some help? Does anyone have any other sketches or pics of Catharine? I have a bad copy of the one in the Illustrated Police News, the terrible creamy coloured sketch, which looks nothing like her and the mortuary photos which are really non existent from the bridge of the nose down. Maybe a better quality enhancment of the mortuary photos? or any pics that I haven't come across? I'm really struggling.

My e-mail box has unlimited capacity if anyone would be good enough to mail anything to me, but it grumbles a bit over 3 mbs.

Thanks a lot
hopefully

Well, you could try the pictures of her descendants available on this site. Go to Books Films and other Media/Non-fiction books/CE JTR Victim by Neal Shelden.

Hi Jane, what a really amazing piece of work!I think that will be as near as anyone will ever get to knowing how Elizabeth Stride looked. And its SO real life!Congratulations, very much looking forward to the others.

As you mentioned in your email[via Suzi]the sketch I did on Mary Kelly was also an attempt at a "reconstruction".I did several before I posted that and each time the features came out much the same----I had used the dreadful photogragh of her as well as other people"s reconstructions with squared paper to help locate each part of the facial "landscape".But we probably wont get too close because there is so little to help reconstruct the eye area. Will be very interested therefore to see what you produce from what remains of Mary.

Regarding Catherine Eddowes,I too have a painting I have not yet posted of her with a sort of goodlooking but"smarmy" Jack! .I used only the mortuary photos and a photograph of her granddaughter that was posted on here some time ago but is now archived[I assume as I am not able to find it].It was surprising how the genetic information from her granddaughters face resembled how I had pictured her from studying the mortuary photos.
Its a pretty gruesome task but then artists in the past used corpses frequently when studying anatomy---and think of Rembrandt"s "The Night Watch"!
I will post the Catherine painting sometime next weekend---or after you have had a chance to finish yours!
A Wonderful beginning and Thanks!
Natalie

Sorry I too have crossed posts --with David.Anyway I remember that the particular photograph I am talking about in the above post
was one which was of a young woman with an abundant mane of brown or black long ringlet type curls and a forties style dress. She was smiling and also she wore glasses.I seem to remember too that she had a little girl seated next to her-her daughter I think.I would love to be able to access it again.Any ideas where it might be?

Hi Jane,

As Robert and Dave already has pointed out, go the Neal Shelden thread linked to above in Dave's post and go back into the archive to the photograph and the sketch posted on March 12.

And stay away from the dreadul Illustrated Police News. Although the drawings there in general are quite OK, the sketch artist's renderings of the women is as far away from the real truth as one can possibly get. Portraits were not his big thing, I would say.

You really shouldn't have low confidence in yourself; you are very talented -- take it from soneone who has been struggling in the art field himself for quite many years (for what it's worth).

All the best
G, Sweden

Hi all,
Thank you so much for your help and encouragement. The links were invaluable.
I've just scared myself and my husband witless. I had already done a pic of Catharine just out of my head, using only the mortuary photos or what there was of them and 'feeling' the rest. It was so much like the pics of her descendants, that we got really spooked. I suppose all portrait artists feel their subjects,
but that did give us a shiver.
I had always thought I could picture Catharine, from what I know of her and from what JtR did to her face. There must have been something about her face that made him react that way. I thought she would have had a quirky, rather quaint face and that would seem to be the case.
I have a bit of tidying up and polishing on the pic and then I will post it. You can tell me if you agree.

Once again, thank you so much

love Jane

Jane - I've just seen the ES picture and I am totally amazed. What a brilliant, shining star you are!!! I could hear William Stewart turning in his grave in the knowledge that his efforts in his 1938 book were so laughable. My God, it is fantastic! I'm just stunned. You're wonderful.

Hi Robert,

It came out a bit llighter than it really is. It's lost a lot of the mood. I'll have to remember that in future. I've just posted a night time scene of Miller's Court on the General discussion board, under crime scenes reconstructions, if anyone wants to check it out. I'm going to bed now, the sherry is starting to work!

I think this Chapman picture is rather touching. I've seen the photo of her and her husband on their wedding day, in full voluminous Victorian dress (her, I mean), and him looking very smart....I think Jane's picture shows some of the respectability she later lost. "Respectability" has negative connotations these days, but I think folks will know what I mean.

You sure ain't no "plain Jane" thats for damned sure !

Absolutely outstanding attention to detail in your art..nothing added for emphasis which makes these works of art really stand out.

I don't get emotional about too much, but the portrait of Stride "got" me...

What a tribute to that woman's humanity......

Absolutely the most impressive post I have seen anywhere in a long time. I truly thank you for sharing this art with us.

What???!!!

Am I missing something here?

We all know that the mortuary shots (not police mugshots as you say, Ron) have been used partially in the reconstructions (particularly clear in the Stride picture) - so what of it? Surely this means Jane's reconstructions are even closer to real life? What do you think police reconstructors do when they have to make up images of John and Jane Does?

As far as 'getting a life' goes - I think you'll find most of the contributors to this site will agree Jane is using it to the full being so imaginative and helpful to the entire Ripper community.

Sorry if I've completely got the wrong end of the stick (let me know - I have a habit of doing so) but your posting strikes me as plain bizarre!

Hi everyone,

I can't believe how smashing you all are. I feel like a damsel in distress being rescued from a fire breathing dragon. I didn't actually see the post, probably just as well! I totally understand that things slip through. At least it gave you lovely people a chance to show how gallant you are. I have been so touched by your posts, you really are the best.

I never usually get any feed back on my work, because I do commissions for National Galleries and Museums mainly and my work for them is not signed, so no one knows me from Adam, even though hundreds of thousands of people see the work. I really got quite choked up at your comments.

I am going to have to post some of the pics in black and white in future for various reasons, which I won't bore you with, but I will be happy to e-mail colour versions to registered members for personal use, if they would be helpful for their research.

I will post as many as I can though in colour and I hope some of them will be helpful to you.

Once again thank you so much for your amazing support.

Just an after thought.

I didn't see Ron the Dons post so I can't actually say much to him as a defense in all fairness, (although you have done a sterling job for me) but just a general comment:

I have always felt that the victims of JtR deserved to have their dignity restored as much as is humanly possible. Those poor women not only suffered a dreadful death, but also for the most part dreadful lives. I am sure that almost everyone would want to see the balance redressed in some way. I know that no-one can really recreate an exact likeness, that would be impossible, but I just wanted to portray real women, who did once have a life.

All we have to work with are pictures of the dead and images from the past. We do what we can.

Others like Suzi and Natalie to mention only two of many have done absolutely wonderful work as tributes to the victims and it is through the thoughts, feelings and eyes of others that we see the most.

best wishes to all,

Jane

Jane,it has given me nothing but sheer pleasure to see these women who now thanks to the great skills and talent you have shared with us we are able to see [or as near as damn it]"IN THE FLESH"--- and still able to smile!!!It is a truly beautiful tribute to them, long overdue. Here they are,not the princesses of the celluloid screen perhaps but the images of humanity we recognise-each one different and a unique, thinking ,feeling and suffering human being. This last to Annie who according to her brother had tried so valiantly to give up drink but apparently couldnt in the end causing her to lose her marriage her security and ultimately her life.It has moved me so much-to see her looking happy,oh now, thats so good to see!
These women are so very clearly people not just the downtrodden images of the mortuary victims of Jack the Ripper. Thankyou for the compliments you give to Suzi and myself. We have all tried in our differing ways to show or"recreate" their lives and tragedies.Truly splendid and moving work Jane,
Thankyou
Natalie

Jane,
Simply you are a breath of fresh air to these Boards, personally speaking I would love a reconstruction Of Joseph Barnett, but that is just being plain bias.
You are a very talented lady.
Regards Richard.

Hi Richard,
Thanks. I am having trouble getting through the door because my head keeps getting jammed in it. It's a good job no-one can see me because I'm cringing with embarressment.

Just to let you know that there are some pictures of Miller's Court on the general discussion board, under crime scene reconstructions, which I think might interest you. When I was doing them I had quite a few light bulbs flash on, because there were things I hadn't thought of before. See if you think the same.

I know you're a Joe man, just for you I'll do him after I have put the rest of the victims up, but
can you help. I only have 2 pics of poor old Joe, the skinny weasel one and the other older one and there is no way he could look like both of them. Do you think he looks like either, if so which should I go for?

All the best

Jane

ps I'm not a Joe man myself I'm afraid, but you put a very good case forward.

Jane, just don't do Joe with a bloody knife in his hand, whatever Richard may say, and however many horse race tips he gives you as an incentive to do it.

Hi Robert,
Joe with a blade, now we are getting somewhere...
Jane,
I would suggest the heavier man would be more of a likeness, although a top coat might have given him a stockier appearence.
Dont worry I shall keep tips for the Gee-Gees to myself although i work in the game, my tipping record on the boards is pathetic.
Richard.

Hi Jane,

Wow. That is all I can say. Wow.

My sincere congratulations to you, you have produced some excellent work there, both of those images as well as your crime scene reconstructions are very atmospheric, I haven't really seen anything like that before, atleast not in the Ripper case.

Well done! Keep them coming!

Richard, you wrote:

"Joe with a blade, now we are getting somewhere..."

HAHA! Somewhere for personal beliefs, yes, but not getting too far on the factual side of things, I don't think.

I will be eternally grateful to you, Jane, if you make up one of those images with Severin Klosowski holding a knife. Oh that would make me very pleased indeed! But it wouldn't make some people I know very happy - you know who you are! ; - )

But, seriously, very well done once again, Jane!

Regards,
Adam.

Jane, can we do interchangeable suspects with knives?

I go for Queen Victoria. She wore a lot of black (wouldn't show up the bloodstains), didn't smile much (melancholy disposition), knew London quite well, and had a collection of kidneys. Well, maybe not the last one.

Okay,
This is getting daft! I promise I will do all of the suspects, just deciding which pics to use. Perhaps I should do Chapman with a knife in one hand a bottle of poison in the other just to hedge our bets.

Hey what about Joe with a cleaver in one and a bouquet of flowers in the other?

Vicky? nuhhhh!
To whom it may concern (and you know who you are), Miller's Court is now a letter box free zone, I got my screwdriver out and did a changing rooms job on them.

I'll post a montage of the corrected pictures when I've made sure that no-one else spots a plane flying overhead, (only kidding) I'm really grateful for everyone's input. You've all been amazing.

love Jane

Back to work now or you won't get anything.

Jane - I got a copy of Wilding's book in the post today. Have you seen his versions of Liz and Annie (or rather, Fry's versions)?

I can upload them if you want.

Philip, dear philip,

please, can I see his pics? I am totally desperate to see pics of all the victims. You might not be able to post them openly because of copyright, but you could, if you wanted to be a real angel, e-mail them to me, even very small, just for a glance.

Okay, grovel over, once I've seen them though, I can post the other 2 I've got ready, but I'm a bit troubled about how right I got them. I would just like to check for piece of mind.

If you think the copyright won't be breached posting them, I'm sure everyone would like to see them. As far as I know you can download anything for your personal use, if it is strictly for research purposes as long as you make it clear where it came from.

I can't see why he'd object anyway, it's promoting his book! Anyone else know anything about copyright? Wouldn't want to get anyone into trouble.

Jane

Well, Jane - here's the thing! I will post them below and if there is copyright trouble Spry can remove them! If they don't appear then get in touch and I will e-mail them to you.

For ref, then, folks - these are pictures by Peter Fry as published in John Wilding's rare book 'Jack The Ripper Revealed' from 1993 (Constable / Volcano Books) - out of print and hard to come by! The great irony and surprising thing is the only 2 pictures are of ES and AC - in that order - which are the 2 you have already posted... in that order! How unlikely is that?!

It will follow any moment now...
