Hi all, I have discussed the fact that prior to 1902, Inspector Frederick Abberline did a last minute appearance in a crime to identify an arrested murderer as the unidentified killer in an earlier crime. In 1902 he identified Chapman as the Ripper. In 1886, in the wake of the arrest of the Netherby Hall Murderers of P.C. Byrnes, he identified one John Martin as the "third man" and murderer of Chief Inspector Simmons in January 1885, at Romford. Despite some exciting details about the Netherby Hall crime and pursuit of the gang involved, it is not as well remembered as the Whitechapel Murders. I have tried to find details on the internet regarding any part of the Netherby Hall Case or the Murder of Inspector Simmons. I have found a site for the ESSEX POLICE: History Notebook (which is interesting in its own right). The site is http://www.essex.police.uk The issues that are dealing with the crime are issue number 4 ("The Rise and Fall of Alfred John Marden" by Martyn Lockwood) and issue number 16 ("The Amateur Hangman" by Fred Feather). Best wishes, Jeff |

Hello Jeffrey. If you can find the book 'Murdered on duty' by Belton Cobb, published by- Brown Watson, London 1961 you will find therein a very comprehensive account of the Netherby Hall Case. Since the action took place in Cumbria you may find some info there. 3 men - Baker, Rudds, and Martin were executed for the murder of Constable Byrnes in the village of Plumpton. Abberline identified Martin as one of two men wanted for the murder of Chief Inspector Simmons at Romford. Regards David

Thans for the link to the times news archive. It is cool to read articles from those murders as they happened.
