"One Day Men will look back and say I Gave Birth To The 20th Century"

I have been having a hard time understanding How and Why this qoute has been attributed to Jack The Ripper. Is this a Actual qoute? Is this statement at all true? If so what are the aurguements. Please help me discuss this further if you can. If You have a free moment and can help explain this to me I would be very greatful.

Hi, Jess:

Someone can correct me on this, but I don't believe the quote, "One day, men will look back and say I gave birth to the 20th Century" attributed to Jack the Ripper in "From Hell" has anything to do with the actual case. It was either invented, I believe, for the Johnny Depp film or else for the Alan Moore/Eddie Campbell graphic comic on which the film was based. I think it is simply a line that sounds deep (or is that Depp?) but is merely a bit of filigree in the film. It sounds smart because the events of 1888 occurred so close to the turn of the century.

Best regards

Chris George
