I was wondering if anyone has any idea when the census records for London and surrounding areas will be finished? Further, if 1901 was the last to be finished I guess we can assume that 1891 will be next: Or should we expect 1911? I have tried to get in touch with PRO but I seem to get lost in the system.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Best Regards

Hi Gary
Well the situation is a little complex!
Any census records up to and including the 1901 census are in the public domain but it's finding an outlet that carries them. Census records are closed for 100 years after the date of the census so the next one (1911 census) will not be released til 2011 etc.
The 1901 data is available on the PRO site but it is a pay site for all but basic data
The 1881 census is freely available on the Mormon Family Search site
The 1891 census is in the process of being transcribed and being put on the ancestry.co.uk site but again it is a pay site
The other alternative is doing a web search and finding suppliers who will sell them on CD
Hope this helps
Chris

Hi Chris

Many thanks for your response.

You are so adept at this I was wondering if I might give you a name and have you look it up for me? I would be happy to pay for the information I need.

It is not a name mentioned in the casebook suspects list.

Best Regards
Gary

Whatho all,

Actually one year more than the official closure period is added to the final date of a file at the Public Record Office. This prevents a file being opened a few months too early. Therefore the 1911 census will be open to the public on 1st January 2012.

Cheers, pedantic Mark

Mark

Thanks, I think a lot of us on the message boards are a trifle pedantic.
