Hi
Incidentally, I was surprised to see the Guardian down as the Manchester Guardian as late as 1888, I was under the impression it was down in London by then? Can anyone help?

Hi Jennifer,

It was called the "Manchester Guardian" until, I think, 1960; when the name was changed to simply "The Guardian". The newspaper remained based in Manchester until it removed to London in 1970.

Best Regards,

UPDATE ON SERVER MIGRATION

Seems most of the DNS changes have gone through, and the majority of people are now reaching the Casebook via the new server. There are some problems however, namely:

1. The "most recent forums" feature in the left hand navigation is stalled. We're working on getting that back up and running again.

2. Emails to anything@casebook.org are getting bounced... hopefully that will be resolved within 24 hours. If you need to contact me please use stephenr3(AT)earthlink.net for the moment.

3. Message boards seem to be working as usual, but we have lost about 2-3 days worth of posts. I tried reinstalling a more recent backup from yesterday, but it kept breaking the site so unfortunately, this is the only option. If anyone wants to carry over a 'lost' post from the old site to the new, you can still reach the old server at http://216.167.97.157

Thanks for your patience!

Stephen, Chris, and Alan--just a reminder that I'm available to assist with transcribing, if anybody wants to hand off any articles to me. I'll even proof them before sending them back-the worst part! :-) Alex, I know you're working off microfilm, but if I can help, drop me a line. I've resolved my computer problems with a fat new system, and my own inquiries are stalled until my pocketbook recovers. I've got some idle time on my hands and kind of miss Viper's calls for assistance.

Wow, I'm impressed at all the additions that keep coming up. Looks like I've got a lot of reading to do! Great work, guys, you deserve an applause. It truly is a damn shame that Viper's not around to see it.
So, Alex, when can we expect some more great Ripper articles from you appearing in the periodicals?

Yours truly,

Tom Wescott

Thanks Tom

I’m sorry for the delay in this response. Our computer died last week and it’s only now, after a new hard drive and upgrade facilitated a miraculous resurrection, that I’ve been able to return to these hallowed halls.

I can’t recall ever having contributed any great Ripper articles to periodicals, but if I come up with one I’ll let you know.

Among other things, I lost all my emails and contact addresses in last week’s sad demise. So, I would be grateful if anyone I owe a response to, or anyone with whom I’ve previously been in contact could get in touch again.

Thanks again
alex

Another big update to the press reports section... we've now got transcriptions of the Daily Telegraph coverage between August and December 1888 available at:

http://www.casebook.org/press_reports/daily_telegraph/index.html

Note that there are portions of several articles which are not replicated on the Casebook, out of deference to the authors of The News from Whitechapel, which is still in print. Notices are included in the proper areas detailing where the missing portions can be found within that book.

Thanks again to Alex for the transcriptions!

Some more press updates today:

The entire month of September 1888 is now covered in the Irish Times section:

http://casebook.org/press_reports/irish_times/

We also have a new Irish newspaper, the Munster News, now available on the site at:

http://casebook.org/press_reports/munster_news/

The above two papers were graciously supplied to us by Alan Sharp - thanks again, Alan!

We've also got nearly a dozen additions today to our pre-1888 London Times coverage thanks to David O'Flaherty, at:

http://casebook.org/press_reports/times_[london]/

Thanks again to everyone for their help in procuring and transcribing these articles!

Hello all,

I'd like to say, regarding 'The News from Whitechapel' by authors Alex Chisholm, Christopher-Michael Digrazia, and Dave Yost, that it is has proved a valuable volume to me, not only for the authors' well-researched and thought-provoking commentary on each murder, but also for the inquest transcripts, which differ from what appeared in the Times (and is carried in 'Ultimate JTR'), and often has more detail. I would recommend that any time you're referring to The Times inquest for your research, also refer to the Daily Telegraph for a second interpretation of the evidence presented.
Great work with the updates, Stephen. I can't comprehend the amount of work that has gone into the press reports section of this website.

Yours truly,

Tom Wescott

Hi Stephen and Alan

Many thanks for putting up the transcriptions of case-related articles from the Irish Times from September through early December 1888. This valuable material helps to supplement what already amounts to phenomenal documentation of the press coverage of the case, a veritable treasury of information. It is excellent to see that the work of the late Adrian Phypers (aka Viper) and his team of intrepid volunteers, who began the Caseboook Press Project, is being carried on in so solid a fashion. Bravo! applause Thank you both, Alan and Stephen!

All the best

Chris
