We ask ourselves what there was about him that made them trust him and I wonder if we are asking ourselves the wrong question.

I saw a battered woman being interviewed the other day. Her self esteem was extremely low and she was warned that if she didn't do something about that problem, it wouldn't matter if she got rid of her current boyfriend, she would just gravitate to someone else who would do the same thing. Eddowes words were telling. She was expecting a "hiding" when she got home.

Most of these women had hit bottom. They were desperate for alcohol and/or a bed. They didn't have much to offer. They were no longer young. They couldn't afford to pick and choose.

If somebody who smelled bad, drooled, was filthy, had red glowing eyes and horns and a knife in his hands offered them a few shillings that would probably be the best offer they got that night.

Maybe the fact they went with him had less to do with him and more to do with them. Maybe he was scary to look at.

Diana,

I think you are right for the most part. Yet when the hysteria was happening, they had to be concerned about their lives enough to at least not feel like they were going to be killed. Would even the most drunk, downtrodden, hungry, thirsty, and cold woman say yes to someone they felt was going to kill them? I don't think so. Now, they may have said yes to someone who was pathetic and smelly, but was generally thought of as harmless in the area. Overall, it probably did have less to do with the the client and more to do with their condition as you say.

Cheers
Mike

There are battered women who have been beaten within an inch of their life by a man and they know perfectly well what he will do given half a chance. But they go back to him.

Polly and Annie wanted a bed for the night. I'm not sure what Liz wanted but Kathy wanted enough money to avoid a hiding. Mary's rent was due the next day.
