Hi. I'm going to be doing research at the National Archives next week, and thought I'd ask if anyone here has used their facilities. I've heard it can be a daunting task. Anyone who's been there have any basic guidance {or moral support for that matter}?
Thanks!
Kelly

Hi, Kelly

I have been to the National Archives on a number of occasions and I don't think the experience is any more daunting than at other manuscript archives around the world that I have visited (mainly admittedly US, UK, and Ireland).

I think you will find that in the manuscript rooms they will not allow you to use pen, but you can use pencil. Also you can't use your own notepad but paper will be provided. Most of your belongings go into a locker and you keep the key to the locker while you are at work on the material. Similar arrangements pertain to the manuscripts room of the Library of Congress. On the other hand, I think in the rooms at the Archives where you will be using microfilm the rules are less stringent about using pen and notepads.

Kelly, e-mail me if you have other concerns about your proposed visit to the National Archives. Depending what you are looking for, for example, you may need to go either the main branch of the Archives in downtown Washington, D.C., or to the new annex in College Park.

All the best

Thanks.
I guess I meant that genealogical research itself is a daunting task, and I may end up being in over my head. I'll e-mail you if I think of anything specific.

Hi, Kelly

The best of luck to you. I think that one of the most frustrating things about genealogical research is that so many people have exactly the same name and you can easily get on the wrong track.

All my best
