FIRST of my auctions for these Ripper pieces is a repro of the "DEAR BOSS" letter, supposedly from Jack the Ripper, framed and presented by Timeframed, LTD. Offered first in 2000, these repros were sold for £150, plus shipping from the UK. Face has the letter to the Central News Agency, and shows the body of the letter, along with postmark and stamp, a true copy of the infamous letter. Below the letter is a brief description of the murders and the provenance of the original letter. On the back of the frame is the certificate of authenticity, showing this to be #44 of 1,000. MINT CONDITION. SIZE OF PIECE IS 22 3/4" WIDE AND 25" TALL FRAMED. SIZE OF LETTER (UNFRAMED) IS 16 1/2" BY 13 1/4".

JACK THE RIPPER - VHS BIOGRAPHY -Phantom of Death
The sensational mystery of Jack the Ripper has remained unsolved for more than 100 years; Biography re-opens the case, examines the evidence, returns to the crime scenes. Victorian investigation methods are compared with modern FBI approaches to tracking serial killers. Looks at suspects who were questioned, including those who were overlooked This study of the motives and methods of the Ripper shows why the gruesome mystery still fascinates crime-lovers everywhere

Hi Chris Scott
I was really interested in the JtR VHS Phantom of Death, however it is unfortunate that it is only available in United Kingdom.
Is there any other location that may stock this item, available in U>S> & Canada?
I would appreciate any info. you can give me.
Thanks

Hi RS,

That's from the History Channel, according to the logo on the spine. The company that does that also does Biography, A&E, etc., so the brand name they put on it can change depending upon which station they air it on.

You can click here to see the page on this website that links to the sales of videos by that company, which also earns the Casebook a little bit of money in the process.

Indeed.

PHANTOM OF DEATH is a US-made 50 minute documentary. It is not bad - but it's not smashing either. The thing that cracks me up every time is the 'East End' kids with really strong American accents who you hear singing 'Jack The Ripper Is Dead', which, apparently, London children still sing to this day.

Yeah, right!

You could do a lot worse than this one, though. The ones I personally recommend are the first episode of the series TO KILL AND KILL AGAIN (sadly not available to buy) which made very few errors and was quite deep, JACK THE RIPPER CONSPIRACIES which is always for sale on eBay cheaply - his narration will make you want to climb the walls, but it does pretty well, and finally THE SECRET IDENTITY OF JACK THE RIPPER which you can also get cheaply on eBay (that's the 1988 Peter Ustinov one). It does have errors but it has great 1988 footage of the sites and - apart from Miller's Court - the recreations I thought were done extremely well. Oh yeah - I mustn't forget THE HUNT FOR JACK THE RIPPER as well (that's the one hosted by the Ripper guide Richard Jones).

I've got about a dozen or more Ripper documentaries and none of them are error free, but some are better than others.

HOPELESS DAWN Fisherman Family Old Art Print by BRAMLEY
In this picture we see the fisherman's cottage with his wife & mother-in-law as they have fallen sleep awaiting his return. We see the untouched meal on the table & the burnt out candle. By the window we see the whipping waves of an angry sea. We know that he was claimed victim by the sea and this will be realized by the two watchers when they awake

'LOST LONDON' - Ex-Detective Sergeant B. LEESON

A SCARCE JACK THE RIPPER ITEM.

Published in hardback circa 1930s by Stanley Paul of London in their Treaure Libraries Series, this book is the FIRST thus. With Portrait Frontis of author.

Bound in mustard coloured cloth which has rubbing to the spinal edges, occasionally to board edges, & to top hinge edge; small 1/4" split in cloth at the bottom of spine on lower hinge; corners mildly bumped; lower corners rubbed; small feint stain on spine and on top of rear board; minor mark on spine and back board. Graded as VG.

The author figured prominently in one of the most notorious crime episodes of the previous quarter of a century (late 19th century). In the course of his astonishing career, Leeson, known as "the man who was shot at Sidney Street", penetrated the haunts of London's worst criminals. He knew them as suspects and as condemned men.

Included is a chapter on Jack the Ripper, which features the murder of Francis Coles (the Swallow Gardens murder) considered by the author to be the last Jack the Ripper crime, + mention of George Klosowski, alias Chapman, a Ripper suspect.

Original foldout map of 1888 Central London. This is written in Frnace and looks great when folded out. About 14X22 when unfolded and complete with no majr tears. Has one spot of scrapbook paper on the back of the map, not visible when unfolded. I am not sure where White Chapel is but I am sure it in on there and it is significant as 1888 was the year Jack the Ripper was doing his thing in England. Great display piece! $4 shipping

The Mystery of Jack the Ripper by Leonard Matters
Not known if this is a 1st. edition, I suspect, however that it is? No D.W. and the boards are grubby as are some of the pages, this book has been well read!! ever-so slightly cocked but otherwise tight and tidy. With black and white plates and maps surly a must for the Ripper "fans"?????? published by Hutchinson & Co.

A Casebook on Jack the Ripper by Richard Whittington-Egan

First edition of an important contribution to Ripperology (not to be confused with the much more common Rumbelow work of similar title) by Richard Whittington-Egan, known for his books on murder and Liverpool, which is believed to mark the first time the - generally discredited - association of George Gissing with the Whitechapel murderer was mentioned in print. Reproduction of Dr. Benjamin Howard's letter to the People on pp132-33. Now extremely scarce, published in 1975 by Wildy & Sons Ltd. Decorative red boards.

Jack the Ripper. Ch. Insp. Littlechild. 1894
The Leadenhall Press, 2nd edition 1894. Entitled,' The Reminiscences of Chief-Inspector Littlechild.' Littlechild was the chief investigating officer on the Jack the Ripper enquiry. The book was written after he retired from the force, but there is no mention of the Ripper case, presumably because it was never officially solved. Edges brown, covers marked. Fep removed and name to pre-title, webbing exposed in a couple of places but contents still tight. 16 pages of ads to rear. Almost G+ for age.

40 Years of Scotland Yard (1933)
Written by Fredrick Wensley, chief Constable, Scotland Yard. Book is an account of his 40 plus years with Scotland yard and the cases he was involved in. It goes from 1888, which includes a description of the Jack the Ripper murders, until he retired. This book is a must for history and crime buffs. It is not in the best of condition but is readable and if handled with care should last quite a while.

This pottery octagonal plate portrays PRINCE ALBERT VICTOR son of QUEEN VICTORIA he was reputed to be JACK THE RIPPER.He was engaged to be married to Princess Mary but died and she later married GEORGE V .The plate measures 91/2" in diameter and has lost its rim gilding but has no cracksor crazing. There are a few surface scratches , however this is a very SCARCE plate and the rarity will outway the imperfections

Florence Maybrick's "Own Story" with Original DJ - 1905
This is a rare edition of "Mrs. Florence Maybrick's Own Story" published by Funk and Wagnalls Company, New York, in 1905 that includes the original dustjacket (please see photo). The dustjacket has a small chip at the top of the spine. There is also a tear along the length of the spine. The book title is not affected. The dustjacket is remarkably well preserved and protected in a mylar jacket.

Mrs. Maybrick spent fifteen years in prison although innocent of any crime other than perhaps poisoning her husband, James in 1889. James Maybrick is a prime suspect in the 1888 Jack the Ripper murders. He became infamous in the early 1990s when his diary was discovered and published. The diary seemed to offer strong evidence linking him to the Jack the Ripper murders.

This 394-page, hardcover book is in near fine condition. The book contains 15 photographs, including one of Mrs. Maybrick (please see photo). Binding and pages are tight, bright, and intact. No writing or markings.

An attractive copper medal measuring 1 inch in diameter and in very fine plus condition. It was struck in 1892 to commemorate the death of the Duke of Clarence, some of whom are rumoured to suggest that he had associations with Jack the Ripper, although never proven. An interesting and historical old medal. Winning bidder pays mailing costs.

THIS AUCTION IS FOR A PIECE THAT IS MOST DEFINITELY R RATED, IF NOT X. IT IS FOR A DIORAMA OF MARY KELLY'S ROOM AFTER THE RIPPER HAS LEFT, AND SHOWS MR BOWYER LOOKING THROUGH THE WINDOW AND SEEING KELLY'S BODY The piece was created for one of the American Ripper Conferences, and is enclosed in a plastic display case. Piece is 9 5/8" long, 4 1/8" deep, 3 3/4" tall. Accurate perspective was the ultimate aim, and the shrunken dimensions are as close as possible to correct. Front of diorama shows Mr Bowyer on the right, looking through the window of Kelly's room; inside is the body of Kelly, lying on the bed. Contents of room are as accurate as possible, right down to the wash "tub" under the bed. View of the room is from the fireplace wall. Back of diorama shows the Millers Court wall and Kelly's door. ANY QUESTIONS??? PLEASE ASK!! AND PLEASE DON'T WRITE TO GIVE ME HELL ABOUT THIS AUCTION...I DO REALISE IT WILL OFFEND SOME, AND DO NOT MEAN TO DO SO.THAT'S WHY I PLACED THE WARNINGS AT THE BEGINNING OF THE DESCRIPTION

THE ROMANTIC CAREER OF A GREAT CRIMINAL
Before Jack the Ripper there was Charlie Peace

A notorious burglar and murderer, he was also a master of disguise and used his talents to escape justice on many occasions.

Here is a record of his criminal career complete with many photographs never seen before. Printed in 1906 this gives the full details of his criminal life.

With card covers this booklet is in remarkable condition for its age with all pages and photographs present and correct. Has owners stamp and handwritten address on frontispiece.

An extremely rare item, it is the only one I have ever seen, this would make a valuable addition to anyone's crime library. Ebay is forcing me to put a reserve of £50 on this item however I might accept less

London's East End Life & Traditions JANE COX
London’s East End – few places can have been packed with such variety of people and ways of life. Despite slum clearance, the Blitz and generations of development, tales of times gone by remain and an historic past has left its mark. It may come as a surprise to discover that the East End was a world of villages, where once were cottages and windmills, pastures and manor.

From the riverside and docks where pirates were hanged and Captain Cook Married a barmaid, to the monasteries and slums east of the tower, from Roman Bow to Shoreditch where Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet was first performed – a tapestry of England’s history is the backdrop to life and tradition in this, the eastern flank of London.

Here were ‘sewer rats` who lived by salvaging coins, weddings and music halls, sea – faring captains, hop-picking excursions, maypoles and prisons. Beggar and King, saint and pilgrim immigrants from many lands, Jack the Ripper: through the passage of changing times, a hotch-potch of people have created the enormous diversity of the East End, a `transit camp` since the fifteenth century.

For sale here is a very good copy of THE LODGER by Mrs. Belloc Lowndes, London, Methuen, 1926, seventh edition. This is the full-length novelization of her Jack the Ripper based story that was filmed by Alfred Hitchcock the same year, starring Ivor Novello. The book measures over 4.5 x 7 inches and has 252 pages. It is in its original colour illustrated dust wrapper and is in very good condition with slight browning of the pages. It is unusual to find the book in its dust wrapper, especially in this condition. The wrapper has some slight closed tears and creases and slight staining on the rear at the top

This is a near complete run of The Whirlwind (London; Vol. 1, No. 1 [June 28, 1890] to Vol. 2, No. 26 [December 27, 1890]), comprising 25 issues (number 25 not bound in) in one volume of yellow cloth. Binding VG, with light soiling. Contents VG, with toning, and occasional small tears. The Whirlwind was a short-lived weekly of politics and the arts published by Vivian Herbert and Stuart Erskine. Herbert and Erskine were young men with pronounced opinions on a broad spectrum of topics, but their defining characteristic was conservatism: they were nationalists (calling themselves Anti-Jacobins nearly one hundred years after the description fell out of vogue), opposed to socialism ("the imminent national danger of the day") and female suffrage ("as well as childhood and doghood suffrage"), believed in voluntary taxation, etc., etc. Despite their reactionary outlook, The Whirlwind was a breezy magazine, full of provocative observations and pleasing to look at. It has the distinction of printing three James McNeill Whister lithographs as supplements. They were "The Winged Hat" (October 25), "The Tyresmith" (November 15), and "Maunder's Fish Shop" (December 27). Whistler was associated with the weekly because two of his students, Walter Sickert (1860-1942) and Sidney Starr (1866/67-1921) were regular contributors of full-page portraits and city scenes. Both are recognized as important 19th century British impressionists, but Sickert has gained another distinction since his death. Both Jean Overton Fuller in her book "Sickert and the Ripper Crimes" (1989) and Patricia Cornwell in her book "Portrait of a Killer" (2002) identify Walter Sickert as Jack the Ripper. Many true crime enthusiasts believe Fuller and Cornwell have amassed "unanswerable evidence" of Sickert's guilt. If they are right, Sickert's murderous campaign against London's East End prostitutes would have been less than two years behind him when he began drawing for The Whirlwind. The title is scarce; only four U.S. institutions claim complete runs.

Professor Francis Camps & Richard Barber - The Investigation of Murder. Back in the 1950s and 60s., Professor Camps was known as one of the 'Three Musketeers'. The other two musketeers were Keith Simpson, and Donald Teare. All three were at one time or another, the first choice Home Office pathologist for particularly gruesome murder enquiries, and all three worked on the Christie murders ( Rillington place) as well as the Porthole murder case. Simpson was probably better known among the Pathologist circle, and Camps probably co-wrote this book in order to keep his name alongside his rival. The book covers the murders of Jack the Ripper., The Maybrick case., Crippen and Christie. (as things turned out., Camps died before Teare or Simpson., and it fell to Simpson to perform the postmortem on Camps., who would have been horrified at the thought !) This book is nice period piece item., published in 1966

Stunning original signed dinner menu from 1903 with ten autographs in pencil obtained by a gentleman who worked as a waiter at the New Vagabond Club in London. Noted signatures on the menu are A Conan Doyle the Sherlock Holmes author and Fred G Abberline the police officer in charge of the Jack the Ripper murders. Interestingly there is the signature of a reporter from the Pall Mall Gazette and an interview with Abberline appears in that newspaper from that period. The reporter has signed the menu "thanks for a wonderful service". There is no mention of Conan Doyle in that interview and his signature could have been obtained before or after Abberlines. Other autographs on the menu are General Ian Hamilton, A H Hawkins and others i cannot make out. Menu is card and stands six inches tall.

A RARE OPPORTUNITY TO SEE THIS CLASSIC OF BRITISH DOCUMENTARY-MAKING ON DVD, AS JAMES MASON UNEARTHS THE HIDDEN SIDE OF SWINGING LONDON IN THE STREET MARKETS, ABANDONED THEATRES, MISSIONS AND MURDER SITES OF THE DECAYING VICTORIAN CAPITAL. SUPERB CLEAR PRINT ON REGION-FREE DVD, BOXED WITH ARTWORK, THIS 1967 B-MOVIE HAS BECOME A FAVOURITE AMONG THE BFI AND BRITART SET.
This is what the critic Michael Bracewell said about this psychogeographic classic: "For James Mason, our glamorous guide to The London Nobody Knows in Norman Cohen's 1966 cinema adaptation of Geoffrey Fletcher's book of the same name, the streets and markets of the old East End were a thriving, exuberant place. Mason, dressed in tweed sports jacket and matching cap, threads his way through the busy crowds with the air of a gentleman tourist. "Sorry to have bumped you sir!" he announces to a man he has just inadvertently jostled, and gives a courteous little tap to the brim of his cap.

But there is a darker side. The imagery of the film intercuts between shots of basins of live eels, vagrant alcoholics and the tombstones in a local churchyard. Mason pays a visit to a house in Fournier Street, too, where he is shown – by a respectful housewife – the spot where one of Jack the Ripper's victims supposedly bled to death. Ruins and dereliction sit side by side with daily struggle.
