Sarah Treadway

Witness at Frances Coles' inquest.

Born c.1866, Islington, London. Wife of licensed victualler Charles Treadway (b.1861, Bethnal Green) of the 'Marlborough Head', 5 Pelham Street, Spitalfields. They had three children, Sarah (b.1883), Charles (b.1884) and Elizabeth (b.1886).[1]. She appeared at the third day of the inquest.

She stated that prior to Coles' murder, she had known a man named Thomas Sadler who had become a regular visitor to the pub for about a year. On the evening of 12th February 1891, Sadler had come into the pub - accompanied by Frances Coles - between 6.00 and 7.00pm. Sadler appeared to have been drinking, but Coles seemed sober. They had three 'quarterns' of gin and peppermint and then left after about 30 minutes.

Mrs. Treadway never saw Frances Coles again. James Sadler had apparently returned later, but she did not see him. She had seen him with his wife in the pub about a year previously.[2]
