According to the Star newspaper 24 September 1888, the police had received a letter from a pawnbroker which suggested that a surgeon who had lived on Great Ormond Street until the 10 September, and who had pawned some surgical knives at his shop, may be able to shed some light on the murders. Despite police efforts, Morford was never found. Apart from the newspaper article there is no evidence to prove he ever existed. A search of the relevant medical directories has failed to reveal a doctor or surgeon named Morford. Neither does his name appear in any police files.
