Berlin, Oct. 26.
The city had been treated to a Jack the Ripper sensation. The horribly slashed and mutilated body of an abandoned woman was found at her lodging in a squalid quarter of the town. The assassin escaped.
The woman was seen to enter the house with a man and within ten minutes the man ran out. The woman was found on the floor fully dressed, with her throat and abdomen cut open. Her name was Hedwig Nitsche. Portions of the woman's body were carried away by the brutal murderer. Blood was spattered all over the ceiling and walls of the room, and the murder seems to have been the work of a madman. Several arrests of suspects made during the day had to be released for lack of proof.
The body of the woman was nearly severed and ripped from the head downward. It seems that another woman tried to enter the room before the dreadful crime was committed. Her attempt disturbed the assailant, who suddenly rushed out, pushing aside several who were in his way. The inmates of the house were awakened by screams and the unknown man hotly pursued but succeeded in making his escape. There have been many other crimes, including suicides, within the past ten days in the lower quarter of the city.
