THE WHITECHAPEL MURDER

The police have not made any arrest in connection with the Whitechapel murder. The inquest opened on Saturday afternoon on the woman who was identified as Maryann Nicholls, formerly an inmate of Lambeth Workhouse. Edward Walker of Albany Road, Camberwell, said deceased was his daughter, aged 43. She married William Nicholls, painter, but they had been separated for 7 or 8 years.

Up to a late hour last night the police had made no arrests, and despite assiduous investigations no satisfactory clue has yet been obtained on which it would be possible to work with any prospect of unravelling the mystery. It has been stated in quarters that there is reason to suspect the existence of a murderous gang in the Whitechapel district to which this and other tragedies might be traced, but the police give no credence to the theory. So far the police have no witnesses to bring forward.
