THE LONDOND BUTCHER
NOTIFIES THE POLICE THAT HE WILL RESUME BUSINESS
AT THE OLD STAND IN WHITECHAPEL AND KEEPS HIS PROMISE

London, July 17.
The woman whose body was found in Castle alley, in the Whitechapel district, last night was a middle aged prostitute. Her throat was cut to the spine. Her clothing had been thrown up, exposing the abdomen, which had been gashed in a horrible manner in several places, though the intestines were not exposed. No part of the body was missing. Warm blood was flowing from the wounds when the body was discovered. A policeman who, with a watchman of an adjacent warehouse, must have been within a few yards of the spot where the murder took place when it was committed, heard no noise. Policemen have been placed at fixed points in Whitechapel since the murders of this character began there, and since the murder preceding that of last night officers have been stationed at a point about 100 yards from the scene of the latest tragedy. Several arrests of suspected persons have been made, but they wee discharged, there being no proof on which to hold them.

It is stated that a letter was received by the police officials before last night's murder in Whitechapel, signed jack the Ripper in which the writer said he was "about to resume his work."

FURTHER PARTICULARS

New York, July 17. (Special)
A cable to The World from London says:-

At 2 a.m. a low part of Whitechapel called Old Castle street was the scene of another atrocious murder of the well known Whitechapel type. A large mass of clotted blood and traces of a desperate struggle bear testimony that Jack the Ripper has again resumed his deadly work of cutting up the bodies of unfortunate women who have taken to the streets for a living. Four months ago the extra force of policemen and detectives, who had been on duty specially for the purpose of trapping the assassin, were withdrawn, as it was thought that there would be no more of such terrible outrages committed, but it seems that the cruel hearted, unnatural beast is still living.

The scene of the crime is in the same restricted area, and once again the murderer is able to shield himself from discovery so as to leave no trace. At 1.30 this morning a constable was walking leisurely down his beat, when he noticed the form of a woman lying in the shadow of a doorway. He was about to rouse the woman when he was horrified to discover that she was dead, and that there was a gaping wound in her throat. The body was lying in a pool of blood when had run in streams from a terrible gash in the stomach, evidently inflicted by a sharp knife or razor. An alarm was raised, and a crowd of detectives were instantly on the spot. The murdered woman seemed to be about 40 years of age, and belonged to the most depraved class of Whitechapel unfortunates. No arrests have been made as yet.
