If newsvendors in the streets call out false news, they are liable to punishment - and justly so; but should not newspaper proprietors share the same fate when they issue false and alarming reports which afterwards are contradicted? On Tuesday last in the City the evening newspapers came out with the report that "Jack the Ripper" (it should be "Jack the Slipper") had been arrested, which proved to be a canard. The Evening News seems to be the "top-sawyer" at this business, and can occasionally give the Star a "start," and that is saying a deal. But the public are getting pretty well acquainted with the sensational placards presented, and are not "caught on" as formerly; in fact the little game is nearly played out.
