I have heard that there are newspaper reports that there is a new JTR movie in the works. Supposedly the producer of "The Killing Fields" wants to make a movie based on the Maybrick theory, but he is proposing that James Maybrick's brother was JTR!! He is apparently trying to find evidence to support this. Lot's of luck! He'll need it. Apparently, he figured there are too many problems with James Maybrick being JTR, so he'll find someone closely associated with James. Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't this was Joseph Sickert and Stephen Knight did in the mid-70's? There was too much criticism of the Prince Eddy theory, so they tried to make JTR be people who Eddy was associated with. Then again, there have already been several movies based on Knight's book, and another one is coming out next year starring Johnny Depp. So maybe the producer of "The Killing Fields" is on to something after all!

Hi, Mike:

The truth does not come into this. We are talking about drama and presenting the story to the public in a way that grabs their attention. Making Big Bucks is the name of the game and what the real story about the Ripper was be hanged. Both films, the Johnny Depp "From Hell" one and the mooted Maybrick one, will probably present their efforts to the public as the truth about the Whitechapel murders, just as was done with the Michael Caine TV film, Jack the Ripper at the time of the Centenary of the crimes in 1988, but in truth they are all fiction.

And wasn't it (the Maybrick Diary program) a load of old cack? A really annoying program from start to finish.

Oh well, at least you were still there at the finish, Jon. :-)

What did you make of Mike Barrett?

Love,

Caz

The most interesting aspect of the documentary, was that I was able to put names to faces, because since I have been reading postings on the Casebook, (over a week now) I feel like I have absorbed a fascinating and interesting variety of personalities, and it was great to put faces to some names.

My overall impression of Mike Barrett, was Jim Royle, and I half expected him to say ‘My Arse’, no seriously His story re- Tony Devaraux is dodgy! But of course Martin made that comment in the documentary, (although he put it more eloquently than that) On first impression however I thought 'is this man capable of writing such a hoax? I know he has a literary talent of some sort because he has written for a comic or something, but he doesn't quite fit the bill. I am thinking in terms of both a disturbed mind, and also a mind so clever that a connection between Maybrick and JTR formed the basis of possibly the most disputed hoax in Ripper history. I don't believe the diary is real at all;however I find some of the coincidences amazing.

Hi Tracy,

I'm not sure you can assume a literary talent on the somewhat flimsy basis that 'a comic or something' decided to publish some work handed over by Mike Barrett. ;-)

Don't forget that the documentary was made before Anne Graham claimed she gave the diary to Tony D. to give Mike, swearing Tony to secrecy. Was Anne trying to make Mike's story less 'dodgy', by telling an even dodgier story herself?

Tony's daughter, Nancy Steele, made the observation that, had her father owned such a document, he would never have given it to Mike, but to one of his own family. Did Anne also have this in mind when making her claim, so it would fit in with Nancy's belief that Tony D. never actually owned the diary?

BTW, didn't you just love the right Royle reaction to the idea of a finger buffet? - "Finger? My arse!" :-)

Love,

Caz

Hi Caz

yes I take your point. In all honestly I was trying to be polite re- mike's literary leanings, because I would hate to think I was stereo-typing him as some sort of scouser. I come from Oldham in Manchester and it is generally known you know that we drink sterra milk and eat pie and peas, we keep Whippets and go to the foot of our stairs regularly :-)

It interested me at the time that Anne Graham didn't appear in the documentary, that is why I inquired as to when it was made.

To be honest Caz I know that since the split of Anne and Mike, Anne has come in to the foreground, but as yet I don't know her part in the scheme of things, except (am I right?) her claim to be a decendent of the Maybrick clan, and that the diary was given to her father Billy Graham. (I think).

Hi Tracy,

Anne didn't claim any relationship with the Maybricks to start with. Billy Graham gave Anne and Feldy the impression, either intentionally or because he was elderly, infirm and possibly rather confused, that there was a family link back to Florie Chandler. This gave Feldy all the ammunition he required to pursue this line of reasoning, which in turn got Anne herself interested in his findings.

But yes, Anne did claim, in July 1994, that Billy gave her the diary, and she has not changed her story again since.

Love,

Caz

Hi, Caz:

If you or I had Feldy breathing down our necks and those of our relatives and in-laws, I am sure we too would have picked a story and stuck with it. :)

Maybe so Chris, maybe so.

I've never had a Feldy, nor anyone like him, breathing down my neck to know all my secrets, so I'm not only extremely fortunate, but also not in the least qualified to comment.

Love,

Caz
