I was just rereading Sugden this week and I read that the murder of Polly Nichols occurred the same day a government official named Monro resigned after a falling out with Warren. I believe Kelly's death and Warren's resignation were almost concurrent. Suppose Monro was so mad at Warren that he wanted to bring him down. Knowing the notoriety that Tabram had caused, he initiated the JTR slayings to destroy Warren. As soon as Warren was driven from office the killings ended. Anybody know much about Monro? Any medical or anatomical background? Maybe he hired a flunky?

I read some more of Sugden and lo and behold after the JTR murders dispossessed Warren, his enemy Monro got Warren's job!!! Here is a motive.

Hi Diana. Sugden is of course a superb source. However, you might pick up an extra fact or two by reading about James Monro, Sir Charles Warren and several other cops under the Police Officials section of the Main Menu here (not these Message Boards.) Several sources are drawn on to compile a "bio" of these Top Cops.

Happy Reading!

Lets look at the Monro theory from the angle of the Goulston Street graffito. I hate Sir Charles Warren so much I'm willing to perpetrate a series of horriffic murders just to bring him down. What better adjunct to the murders than an antisemitic riot. I run away from Mitre Square with a deliberately chosen souvenir that can't help but be linked to the murder site. I have been impressed with the unrest that the Pizer matter provoked. The plan is to play "drop the hanky" in Goulston Street, chalk up the graffito, one calculated to create an antisemitic riot, and run. But when I get there I realize the police are all over the place looking for me. I do not want the police to find my little bombshell because it will be suppressed. So I hide until I think they are through looking and then plant the piece of apron and write the graffito. I'm hoping an ordinary citizen will find the graffito. It explains why Jack hung around so long to write that cryptic message.

anon,

Now maybe I missed something here but I thought that's exactly where all theories began---in one person's mind! Why don't you let Diana run with hers if she wants to? Don't let it get to you so much. At least she's not talking about bringing out a book yet :-)

Love,

Caz

This theory like all my others may founder on the impossibility of my going to England to check anything. However, to recap 1)Monro resigned the day of the first murder 2)Warren resigned the day of the last murder 3)Monro got Warren's job. 4) JTR hung around as long as he dared, hoping the police would lose interest before he posted the Goulston Street graffito. Of course if the Dr. is right (and I think he is) Warren had to have picked up some anatomical knowledge somewhere (he was some kind of Colonial administrator in India at one point I believe -- I wonder what he dabbled in there. Or maybe he hired somebody with anatomical knowledge to do the dirty work. Dont forget that one of the Stride witnesses saw two men. Thanks Caz, its nice to have somebody speak up for you.

I've been looking at the letters again, widely discounted because they appear to be the work of an educated person trying to sound uneducated. But wouldn't that be the case if the writer was Monro? Everything in them smells of a gloating spirit and one who is trying to be as inflammatory as possible. That would be true too if he were trying to bring Warren down. Finally, isn't Jack a nickname for James?
Sugden makes the point that several things Jack did point to an antisemite. Is there any info on whether either Monro or Warren were Jewish, or perhaps antisemitic? Was their quarrel perhaps something relating to the Jews? Maybe Monro blamed the Jews for the loss of his job?

Found something else! I was reading the suspects section under Druitt and I found that Sir Melville McNaughton, a friend and protege of Monro was the one who proposed Druitt as a suspect and after that a lot of the police interest died down. Is it possible that the private information McNaughton refers to came from Monro? If Monro was JTR he would have an interest in promoting a dead suspect and thus causing the investigation to die out.

Those who have read my posts will know that I feel conspiracy theories are simply looking for what was not there, however I woudn't say anyone was daft for attempting to come to a theory independently. Let's face it, most of us were hooked on the royal conspiracy for a while. This one has as much validity in that it is within the realms of possibility.

Having said that open minded is not the same as unquestioning and this theory, like the royal one, strikes me as simple not feasible. The Gull/Sickert/netley theory implies that two pillars of victorian society took it into their heads to murder at least 3 women to solve a problem which could have been solved by quietly spiriting them away to a mental hospital or prison. Even if it was decided to kill them would these men use such a high profile way of doing it. A simple blow to the head or a knife through the heart would do it and in the east end it wouldn't have drawn much attention thus minimising the chance of the conspiracy being revealed.

Similarly with Monro/McNaghten. Monro hates McNaghten. I know, he thinks, I'll kill a few prostitutes. Then I'll bribe people to create a fuss, make people panic. Once that's done I'll spatter a few clues around, drop a few names in the right places, write some letters. I know Monro was involved with the secret service of the day but surely if he was going to kill anyone he would hire some thugs and have mcNaghten killed.

What you have to ask is why go to all that trouble when the fenians would quite happily kill McNaghten for nothing. Any financial transaction would be a bonus.

Sorry but it doesn't hang together for me.

Sorry gang, in my last post here please read Warren for McNaghten. Temporary slip of the mind.

Once again apologies I will now go and beat myself up until I promise not to be so silly in future.

There you go, the Ripper victims were actually killed by Divia's grandmother her 'Twister-Serial killers edition' and her specially bred rabid hamsters. Did anyone check the bodies for alfalfa pelets and Karo syrup?

I knew the truth would surface eventually.

One question, does anyone have documents related to the murders from an ancestor? As a genealogist with a relative who may have been living in the east end at the time this is of interest to me.
