Its quite one thing to research the activities of one of several anarchist groups at large in the East End, but where is the reason to murder a few bedraggled prostitutes?
Several have suggested a remote connection between the Irish situation and the Special Detective branch's investigation into the activities of a suspect in the Whitechapel murderer investigation.
And in this case any connection is a documented one that might have more substance than what you are proposing.

Jon, yes, I have researched this theory; that by drawing the police into the East End and away from other duties including the protection of government ministers, enabled political assassins easier access. Nick Warren viewed this was the reason for the murders, but it does not make sense! it would be pointless to go into this theory here because it leads no where. ED.

However, after researching several revolutionary groups subsequent to concluding that this was a conspiracy, the anarchists at Berner Street required more attention.
They were looked at in detail, handwritings were sought for comparison this took over a year. best wishes ED

Once again I'm not clear on this.

Are you suggesting you think these anarchists required more attention?, how so?, could you elaborate on their hit record?

Are you suggesting they murdered several women to draw police away from Ministers, who could then be picked off?......were any assassinated?....if not, then the anarchist plot failed?...then how could they have required more attention....why?

Thanks, Jon

Just a minor correction. Ravachol's anarchism
was suspect to many people. He seemed to financially benefit from several of his crimes.
Burns may have known Ravachol, even known him
through left of center groups, but it does not
mean that he believed Ravachol was a real anarchist. You can read more about him, and the
worldwide anarchist movement in Barbara Tuchman's
The Proud Tower.

By the way, was the John Burns that you mentioned,
the future labor union leader and cabinet officer
in Asquith's government?

I'm beginning to like Mr. Bloomfield. Once in awhile someone shows up here who I feel confident may actually be smart enough to be a worthy opponent. It is a worthy puzzle, after all.

Jon, Nick Warren, viewed that the murders were in order to draw attention away from certain government ministers, who would then be assassinated by the I.R.A.

On exploring this idea in detail, I viewed that it lead no where.
ED.

Jeff, Ravachol almost certainly did benifit from his crimes, I have my doubt's that he was a true revolutionary!
I have to go to work, I will get back to you! ED

David, thank you for your complement.
Ed, I will be interested in your further comments
on Ravachol.

Fellas, this has been one really sad horrible day.
I watched the fire and aftermath of the towers
from my office in Brooklyn. I feel numb.

God have mercy on all those poor souls.

Jeff, I began my short research concerning John Burns at; http//www.spartacus.schoolnet.co.uk/RE burns htm The site provides us a great deal of information concerning the man; post 1878. Victorian riots, By A and K Dunes also provides us with a good deal of information. Victorian rioters, another good source concerning both Burns and Mann and many other extremists is also excellent. Best Wishes.
Americans, I would like to send all you my heart felt condolences. ED.

I noticed in THE ULTIMATE JACK THE RIPPER COMPANION that one of the witnesses in the Anne Chapman murder was named Elizabeth Long. Later, Elizabeth Stride, known as “long Liz” was killed. Has there ever been a suggestion that a connection exists? Is this just coincidence, as I assume?

Richard,

Elizabeth Long also went by the name of Mrs Darrell/Durrell according to the papers, making her real name a bit of a mystery.
Also consider the fact that "Long" was a nickname given to any one in the East End with the surname of Stride. There is no connection.

Cheers,
John

LIZ STRIDE in 1881 Census
I found the following entry:

LIZ STRIDE:
from 1881 Census

Address:
69 Usher Road
London

JOHN T STRIDE (Head)
Born 1827 in Sheerness, Kent
Aged 54
Carpenter

ELIZABETH STRIDE (Wife)
Born 1847 in Stockholm, Sweden
Aged 34

All other sources I have seen give here year of birth as 1843 but the census gives 1847
May be of interest

PRINCESS ALICE DISASTER
I have found a few resources about the Princess Alice disaster in which Liz Stride claimed here husband and various offspring died

http://www.yellins.com/woolwichferry/thames/PrincessAlice.htm

This gives a good account of the event with illustration of the vessels involved

http://www.alsbury.co.uk/princessalice/
This gives a list of documentation available on the event

http://www.alsbury.co.uk/princessalice/alice0.htm
This gives an alphabetical listing of those who died, declared missing and who were saved.

Hope these are of interest
Chris Scott
