Hi everyone. I recently rented the movie "From Hell" about Jack the Ripper. As I said in a different post I have been reading Patricia Cornwells book about Jack the Ripper so this movie ( and I realize that it is a movie and not everything you see is "truth" ) was interesting to me because in Patricias book she seems positive that Jack the Ripper is Walter Sickert and in the movie its suppose to be Queen Victorias family doctor ( I apologize to anyone that hasnt seen the movie for revealing the ending but my point of this post is to see if anyone else had seen the movie and believes who they think Jack the Ripper was ) ..... so anyone else out there thats seen that movie do you think it was just a "movie" or there might be some truth to it? It was a good movie by the way.
Thanks!
April

Hi April:

I think by now that anyone that reads these message boards has either seen the movie by now or already knows how it ends, so I wouldn't worry too much about revealing the ending.

Of course, there are quite a few people out there that feel that this is the "final solution" to the Ripper mystery. And while I would never tell anyone that there is no way that it could have possibly happened that way, one must agree that it is not as likely as, say, a much more boring answer, hm?

Think about it: the involvment of the royal family makes for a far more interesting plot than a Jewish immigrant that sells fish for a living (not that I think that the Ripper was such a fellow, I was just using this as an example).

I will admit that I found a lot of the movie to be entertaining, for the story is a rather ripping yarn. I thought that it was directed well, and had some very good actors. But do I think it really happened that way? No, I don't.

But don't just take my word for it. I suggest that you do a little keyword search on "From Hell" and see all the previous posts that were made over the past year.

Warm regards,
Divia

Hiya April,

It was just a movie, loosely based on a comic book, which was loosely based on Stephen Knight's discredited "Final Solution".

There isn't any truth in the story at all, but the sets were fabulous and it was a lot of fun. :-)

April-

Liked the flick. It was good fun as long as you don't take it seriously at all.

The idea that the killing were to quiet a group of people at a marriage is really pretty silly if you think about it. If the royals/Masons/whomever were going to kill a set number of specific victims to keep them quiet they'd do it all in one night, not over the space of three months. I mean, come on, people with a secret theoretically that important wouldn't just be left alone that long to go and tell anyone and everyone they wanted.

It's a shame we don't see the actress who played Annie Crook in more movies.

But whatever you do, do not let the portrayal of Abberline (In the person of that Depp chappie.) mke you think he was really like that. God knows what posessed the Scriptwriter to make him a druggie psychic. This has no basis in reality and Abberline was a staid and experienced detective.

Yes it was a good yarn but there's probably more truth in a government manifesto.

And of course disembolwing probably wouldn't be part of the program. If there really were a conspiracy to get rid of them I'd think poisoned gin would be a quick and sure method.

If I'm not mistaken, in the movie, the disembolwing part was an added touch from the unstable mind of Dr. Gull.
