This could also vary in countries? I have the 2 DVD set but the documentary is not that of Knight's, it's another called "6 Degrees of Seperation".

I did wonder about that, Esther. I also have the 2 DVD set, and the Absinthe Makes the Heart Grow Fonder item appears as John described it on the menu screen for Disc 2, as does the scalpel in the background - it's highlighting the scalpel that doesn't seem to be possible. Maybe we Europeans are being short-changed by 20th Century (sic.) Fox? If anyone here can access the Knight documentary on the Region 2 version, could they say how?

Cheers

Guy

I got into the Jack the Ripper case THIS YEAR. I've read everything I can get my hands on, devoured this website, and I shamelessly admit to full blown wishy-washyism, as I change favorite suspects several times a week. Anyone who can communicate effectively in English has an audience in me, at least for that particular moment. My FAVORITE favorite suspect is Joe Barnett. My "kind of" favorites are Tumblety, David Cohen, Hutchinson, Maybrick. I totally believed it was Dr. Cream for all of about 5 hours. I have absolutely no belief in Druitt or Michael Ostrog, fer pete's sake. Keep those theories coming!!!!!!!!

Brenda.
I put my candidates into 4 camps
Favourite...George Chapman
Probables...Tumblety, Bury, Kelly, Cohen etc
Possibles...Maybrick, Barnett, Druitt etc
Never in a million years...Cream, Gull, Clarence, Conspiracies etc
That's how I try and make sense of it all.
They do change occasionally however.
cheers

I have to admit to being dragged into believing the "Royal Conspiracy" theory for quite sometime. After opening up my mind to other suspects I've come to favor people like Kosminski, Tumblety and Chapman. If asked to name one suspect out of all the possibilities.....I honestly couldn't do it.

What an Interesting thread and I didn't find it till too late. It's a tribute to all Ripper authors that they can convince you of the veracity of their case enough to make you change your mind several times.

I will just say that, like most of you, Stephen Knight was the start of my interest in the case but I feel that the Ripper when found will be just an ordinary guy (Kosminski/Chapman type.) Chapman would have my vote. These theories are very interesting and some make good stories but I believe the truth is much more mundane.

I've been interested in JtR since I was a kid, and I can't really remember where or when the first time I heard about it was. Must have been in my early teens, and I'm 37 now... I guess I can just say I've "always" been interested in the case.

I can honestly say that I haven't changed my mind about who Jack was because I've never really been convinced by any of the arguments. I think it's possible that it was one of the reasonable suspects - I enjoy conspiracy theories, but only as a sort of parlour game, I don't actually believe any of them. I also think that it was possibly some elusive nobody that has never been connected with the case.

Hi Philip.
Got to agree with you that Jack is most likely to be a mundane suspect as opposed to a "celebrity" suspect like Sickert, the Royals etc.
The more I've delved the past few weeks, the more I've swung towards Bury.
Chapman is still very possible, as is Kelly. They are my top 3.
Of the rest, I think Cohen/Kosminski (still can't work that out) is the best there is.

Greetings all:

Personally, I have changed my opinion as to the identity of JtR more times than I have changed my hair color.

The only suspect that I have never seriously considered is Lewis Carroll. All others though, I have given careful consideration. I can only come to one conclusion: They all did it. *giggle*

Warm regards,
Divia

I just checked the most popular suspects rankings for the first time in some time and noticed that my favorite suspect, Chapman, has quitely moved up the chart (he used to be 3rd, then he was 2nd, and now, if you discount Sickert, who is just the fad of the moment, and "the lodger", he is 1st).

Chapman doesn't get a lot of attention on these boards, but evidently an increasing number of readers are falling into his camp.

That's the fun of it. I don't know who did it and until we have more info or we come up with some new slant on the info we have I won't know. Its been said many times. You can either pick a suspect and then spend all your time bending the evidence to fit or you can pick through the evidence looking for who fits it.

For me, Ripperology is based on hero-worship. In the beginning, I worshipped Begg, and believed in Kosminski. Then I found Rumbelow, and believed in Druitt. Later I read Sugden, and accepted Chapman. Fickle me. And finally there was Fido.

From the beginning (way back to the totally screwed up entry in the Book of Lists) I never really had favorite suspects, but the people I've leaned towards changed.

Thanks to the Accept/Reject thread I had to try to rank suspects. I was surprised I gave Chapman a Maybe (my highest rating). If you'd asked me before I'd probably have rejected it out of hand. He doesn't "seem" right to me, but on facts alone I have to admit he's better than most.

I also didn't even really consider Hutchinson a candidate at all until reading Garry Wroe's book and talking with him here made me realize that this guy had to be lying and that he was likely stalking Kelly.

I never was really in favor of Druitt or Tumblety, but they've fallen quite far down my list now thanks to new information I've seen posted here.

And, of course, the more I look into it the more I think the police officials didn't have a clue.

Dan
