Folks,

I've spent about the last four hours surfing around the web, and on the casebook, trying to find the murder rate statistics for London, or the East End, for the period before 1888.

I want to put in my paper that murders were uncommon prior to 1888 and the police should have noticed this, but I can't find a source to backup what I recall being discussed on the boards.

Any help pointing me towards a source would be appreciated. (ALMOST DONE WITH THIS DAMN THING!)

Bruce Paley in his book "jack the Ripper, The Simple Truth" has a nice little chart showing all the causes of death in the area in 1887. Guess which cause of death does NOT appear?? Yep, you guessed it...M-U-R-D-E-R!!!!!

Brenda,

If you can get me a page number for that chart, I will love you for the rest of my life!

Hi Brian

The chart Brenda refers to appears among the photographs between pages 174 & 175 of Paley’s 1996 paperback edition of “Jack the Ripper the Simple Truth.”

It is worth remembering however, that, contrary to popular misconceptions, this chart relates to causes of death of Whitechapel residents only. Not, as is often assumed, the causes of all deaths occurring in Whitechapel during 1887.

Best wishes
alex
