It appears that JTR might have eaten Katharine Eddowes'kidney and possibly Mary Kelly's heart. Whether he had anatomical knowledge or not, once he got the kidney out he would have recognized it for what it was if he was used to eating kidney. The location of the human heart is well known. When I buy meat, there are certain cuts I avoid because they are not a cultural norm for me. Our Mexican friends are fond of menudo and African Americans have their chitlins. I do not buy stomach or intestines I suppose because that was the way I was raised. Similarly there are cuts of meat I only buy rarely or not at all because I can't afford them. The meat one is used to is conditioned by both culture and socioeconomic class. Now, what class of Brits in 1888 ate hearts and kidneys? I honestly don't know since I'm a Yankee. I've heard of your steak and kidney pie. What class of people normally would eat it? Would heart be a delicacy only enjoyed by the rich or would it be lower class fare? Jack would probably be drawn (ugh) to the parts of the body he was normally used to eating.

Hello Diana, my favourite food is a fry-up, bacon, (smoked) egg, bread, tomatoes, potatoes, barbecue beans, not all at once though, oh, and sausage, the full English breakfast is a big thing with me, steak and kidney pie also, though not human:), you can buy it ready to heat in the oven from the super markets. The cockneys like tripe and onions, jellied eels,--thats not for me.
I've bought sheeps hearts for the dogs, and when they are cooking they smell really appetising, I wouldn't eat one though, they are sold as petfood.
Pig and lamb kidneys and liver are readily available in the super markets,-- fried liver&onions is very nise:) honest!

This thread is just offal !!
Do any fellow Brits remember eating tongue, yeuch.
This list could be endless, black pudding, pigs trotters... I'll stick to good wholesome haggis anyday.
Bon appetite

Hi Jim

I share you feelings on tongue, and the Great chieftain o’ the puddin-race.

But do any other Jocks remember eating ‘potted heid’? I haven’t a clue what this delicacy consisted of but, rather worryingly, it translates as Potted Head.

Best Wishes

So those organ meats would be for poorer people?
I know its gruesome but it may tell us something about Jack.

Hello all,

Blimey am I pleased to be vegetarian !! :)
sausages have always been a good source of 'leftovers' and have always consisted of anything from lips, various ground organs, bits of skin, powdered bone, genitalia, entrails etc etc etc - you name it, it's in there...well not much actual prime meat though.
Also some pies of the day too I expect were full of these mouth watering ingredients...yum!

mmm I'm off out to kill me a pig :) *licks lips*

enjoy your sausages and burgers....oh and your chicken nuggets too.....and perhaps your liver, heart and uterus too

tuck in *urk*

take care

Greetings all:

Did you ever see the police report on the Eddowes case? There was a note in there that a piece of paper was found clutched in her hand... it said "Eat Chicken".

And I'm off for a garden burger...

Whoosh!

Hello All.

Anthropophagy for the serial killer is not ordinarily driven by economic necessity or social conditioning. After all, a young Arthur Shawcross was never so desperately poor that he was compelled to supplement his normal dietary intake with female genitalia. The reason why men like Shawcross graduate to cannibalism is that it arouses them sexually and confirms their absolute power over a victim. As such, it can be classed as psychosexual behaviour.

Enjoy your supper.

Diana,
I agree with Warwick's statement, most Victorians would have eaten offal products. For nutrition, it was better than eating white bread, the over-refined form first appearing in the 1880s.
I sailed with an Irishman (from the North) a few years ago, and he asked me "Where does oxtail come from... a pig?". He asked me not tell anyone about this, and for the last 18 years, I've kept my word. I've only told a few select people.

Off the record, on the QT, and very hush hush.

Rick,
erm...bacon *thinks*, hmmm, the only thing I can think is that too much fried bacon will lead to men growing breasts :) But then again, why should women have the monopoly on those ? Bacon is quite healthy actually apart from the streaky variety but like all meat it rots in the old belly.
Pork scratchings meanwhile (do they sell those things in the US at all I wonder?), there have been a few deaths caused by people choking on pig hairs!

Interestingly enough, chicken nuggets actually contain more pork derivatives than poultry! I wont list the ingredients as they're pretty vile.

Back to the Victorians, they were keen on their beef dripping and in soups, for stock they would use whatever they could get their hands on.
"Waiter I have a uterus in my soup" "Sir, keep it quiet or they'll all want one"

take care

Hello, dearest Garry:

Yes, they do sell pork scratchings in the States, only they are called pork rinds here. I have never heard of death by pork rind, but it sounds like a vegan nightmare. *urp*

As to men growing breasts... most disturbing. Here in the States, what is known as regular bacon is the streaky kind, the nonstreaky kind is called Canadian bacon. I wonder why? And would JtR prefer streaky or nonstreaky? These are questions that kept me out of the really good schools...

Luv,
Divia

Rod & Divia,
you might be right there :)

Diana,
I know, they just get silly don't they ? :)
BUT, they do say that the 'Dear Boss' letter shows some Americanisms...well I managed to be given the original practice draft for the letter and I think you'll see how they toned it down for the final one to disguise the Deep South origins:-

Dear Bost,
ah keep on hearin' th' po-lice haf caught me but they wont fix me jest yet. ah have laughed when they look so clevah an' talk about bein' on th' right track. Shet mah mouth! Thet joke about Leather Apron gave me real fits. ah's down on who'es an' ah shant quit rippin' them till ah do git buckled, cuss it all t' tarnation. Gran' wawk th' last job was. ah gave th' lady no time t'squeal, ah reckon. How kin they ketch me now. ah love mah wawk an' be hankerin' t'start agin. Yo' will soon hear of me wif mah funny li'l games. ah saved some of th' right red stuff in a ginger beer bottle on over th' last job t'write wif but it went thick like glue an' ah cant use it. Red ink is fit inough ah hope ha. ha. Th' next job ah do ah shall clip th' ladys ears off an' send t'th' po-lice officers jest fo' jolly'dn't yo'. Keep this hyar letter back till ah do a bit mo'e wawk, then give it out straight. Mah knife's so nice an' sharp ah's hankerin' to git t'wawk right away eff'n ah git a chance. Good Luck. Get off th' dam' pawch!

Yourn truly

Diana,
I was being silly and I hope you don't feel that I was making light of your original thought. I believe (I know I'm being optimistic) that fresh approaches along with experienced scholarship will someday combine to really narrow the field of suspects.

Eduardo,

Thankyou very much, you're too kind.

Diana,

We need to get rid of our madness sometimes.
It's hard to tell whether The Ripper did actually indulge in cannibalism or not...it's always pretty normal for a serial killer to take some form of trophy from his victims be it clothing or whatever.
The only pointers that hint at the Ripper actually eating parts are the letters but the jury are still out on that...oh and that hoax of a diary too.

Who knows though ? perhaps he did ?

take care

Garry my love,

What? I'm sorry, I can't read what you've posted. I've gone blind, you see.

Dear Jon,

I don't know; I suppose it is relevant as long as people believe it is a possibility. I don't presume to know one way or another. But that reminds me...

Does anyone know what the affect that the wine would have had on the DNA in the kidney? I'm not certain whether or not you could get a good DNA sample from a kidney or not, but I wonder if the wine would accelerate the breakdown. Wouldn't it be neat if the kidney from the Lusk letter were available? Perhaps we could match it with Eddowes (or at least, compare it with known relatives). That would certainly tell us if the Lusk letter were genuine.

Ah, my daydreams....

Warm regards,
Divia
