All chat room messages will be moved here. Some have been lost and will have to be reposted; these include the access instructions and direct link posted by Grahf.

Do not despair; this subject and its posts will remain forever or until the presidential election is done, whichever comes first.

I am posting QBase's Mac fix before it vaporizes too.....

Mac users who are having problems need not fear, I am your saviour. Apple realeased an update for there Mac OS Runtime for Java. It reads:

Apple has released an International English Mac OS update, Mac OS Runtime for Java (MRJ), version 2.2.3.

The update is certified for use with Oracle applications, and offers "substantial" performance improvements and bug fixes, says Apple.

MRJ is Apple's implementation of Sun's Java Virtual Machine (JVM). It provides the runtime software needed for Java applets and applications. It also includes the Apple Applet Runner, a utility that can run applets without a browser.

The update also introduces JAR (Java Archive) caching. If a Java applet uses many - or very large - JARS, loading files to make applets work can take some time. MRJ 2.2.3 saves copies of JAR files to the Mac's hard drive. MRJ then checks cached JARs to speed up the loading time for applets.

Memory problems have been addressed, and the improved Apple Applet Runner is capable of loading and running applets with 2byte filenames, including
Japanese and Chinese filenames.

You can download this from the Apple website:
http://asu.info.apple.com/swupdates.nsf/artnum/n11572

Hope this helps
G

Until we get the link reposted, here are the temporary directions on how to reach the new chat room.

1 - Go to www.silsbee.com.
2 - Select the chat room link at the far left.
3 - Wait a few minutes until all drivers, applets, scripts, etc. have loaded. A series of boxes will then appear in the middle of the screen.
4 - Enter your nickname where indicated.
5 - Ignore the e-mail address.
6 - Delete the #silsbee chat info and enter
#TheJTRChatroom exactly as shown.
7 - Click the connect button.
8 - You should then be in the chat room. Return users may have to enter a password. If your nickname is already in use on the server (and there are over 6,000 chat rooms on PlanetZ.net), then you will be known as Guestxxxx, where xxxx is a number. You can then change nicknames by using the /nick function.
9 - Enlarge your screen TWICE to get a full screen of chat room.
10 - Mac users; please see QBase's instructions if you have trouble entering. Acer users; please check your browser java settings or contact Acer to see if there are some Acer OS problems with java.

NOTE - Direct links to The JTR Chatroom are located at the top of this message collection and at the very bottom of the introductory Message Board Screen. The directions given above in the earlier post are still valid.

Please:

- No Profanity
- No Racial or Other Slurs
- Serious ripperchat encouraged instead of small talk

The Chatroom is most active at about 10 PM EST,
although due to the global nature of the Internet
and widespread interest in JTR, chatters may be found
in there at most any time.

We welcome anyone interested in JTR and invite all serious chat participants.

We will begin having structured chats in The JTR Chatroom each week at 8 PM CST on TUESDAY nights.

The weekly topics may be found in the 'Read This First' section of the message boards. If you have a favorite topic or one that you would like to see discussed, please post it here and the next week's topic shall be selected from the available candidates.

For the benefit of our European and Aussie brethren that cannot participate, I will post the log of the chat if it is meritorious.

All are encouraged to participate. To access The JTR Chatroom, use the links within the Casebook or that posted below.

http://www.geocities.com/grahf_chess/index.html

We hope to see you there.

Re: Abberline

Those of you who have entered The JTR Chatroom and have been put off by the unsettling presence of Abberline need not be offended. Abberline is a bot, not a fellow chatter, that was installed to police the chatroom 24/7. Abberline has been muted, so he will ordinarily not say anything in reply to your greetings or questions, no matter how many times you try.

However, he has a low tolerance for profanity, so keep it clean in there. Miscreants please also note that he never forgets a face - or an IP.

mIRC settings to access The JTR Chatroom:

mIRC users have begun wondering how to access the chatroom with mIRC instead of the typical java chat links.

Below are the settings that I use in mIRC. If these do not work, then I will have my administrator compose a more detailed set of instructions for posting. Good luck & welcome!!

I use a protection script that was downloaded from the mIRCx website for use in chat room administration. There are literally thousands of such scripts available, and you may have to experiment with the settings to find the combination that works the best for you.

1. Call up mIRC options (popup menu).
2. Category: Connect
3. Set IRC Servers to 'All'.
4. The pulldown menu box underneath the box in 3) must have TheJTRChatroom added and entered. Enter info exactly as shown.
5. Other info here is optional.
6. Much other here is optional for the user, until you get to Category: IRC Perform.
7. Check the box 'On connect, perform these commands'. Then edit and enter where indicated:
8. logon
/ns identify yourpassword
/join #theJTRChatroom
9. All other entry is user-optional.

This should serve to gain access, but if not, please e-mail me and I will have a more detailed set of instructions created.
