Released as part of the "Pitkin Guides" series, Jack the Ripper is a short, 20-page overview of the victims, suspects and various theories surrounding the Whitechapel murders. Approximately 6.5 x 9 inches in size and lavishly produced with high-quality, color illustrations on every page, this booklet will surely become a common sight around the various tourist destinations of East London. And its well worth the modest list-price of just £3.50.

The seasoned Ripperologist will find few, if any, historical inaccuracies within the text. Its obvious that John McIlwain, the author, has done his research. The result is a beautifully-produced booklet which covers all the salient points of the case without delving into wild theorizing or falling victim to the usual canards.

Seasoned students of the case will find no new information here, but collectors will surely want to pick up a copy simply for its high production quality. It would also serve well as a very short and casual introductory text for novices to the case. I'm sure these would sell like hot-cakes on the Ripper tours. Highly recommended.

(As a personal note, I was sent a set of galleys for this publication late in 2003... I noticed a few small errors in the text, and casually mentioned them to the publisher via email. Much to my delight I find these have all been fixed in the final production. So kudos to Pitkin's for caring enough to make the edits!)
