Unfortunates begins with a strong general overview of the canonical Ripper murders. Christopher does not believe Stride to be a true Ripper victim, citing numerous differences in the wounds and general method of operation. His preferred suspect is Joseph Barnett, who according to Christopher murdered Nichols, Chapman and Eddowes because of his intense hatred of prostitutes - scaring his lover, Mary Kelly, off the streets was an added bonus.

Christopher cites many of the same bits of "evidence" to support his theory, including Barnett's alleged echolalic speech-impediment and his seemingly self-incriminating remarks at Kelly's inquest. There are no new revelations in this book, but it does provide an excellent run-down of Barnett as a suspect. Recommended.
