Hello fellow film viewers,
Does anyone know if it still possible to obtain a copy of the two (maybe three if you include "The River" programme) television programmes aired in November 1959 titled "Farson's Guide To The British"?
Made by Farson at Associated Rediffusion for ITV,
the last two programmes dealt with Jack The Ripper.
The first of these, shown November 5th 1959 in Britain, dealt with the sites and background to the murders, and ended with Farson making an onscreen request for JTR material from his viewers. Episode called: "Wave Of Terror".

The second, shown on November 12th,1959 in Britain and called something like "The Curious Incident At The Grave" outlined the spurious Grave Spitting story; then climaxed with Farson holding up "M J D's " death certificate and quoting from the never-before seen Macnaghten Memorandum.
Both Colin Wilson and Donald McCormick as recent experts were interviewed.

Hi John,
I for one would be extremely intrested to see both programmes especially the latter, as you proberly know i am a believer in the said incident.
Just one point did not programmes at that period go out live?, if so the author of the 'Grave spitting incident must have sent in the report straight away or was Associated Redifussion aware of that alleged occurance earlier.
I always thought that the writer wrote in after programme ones appeal and the sack containing the letter went missing therefore scrapping any idea of a follow up on that incident.
Is obvious by your post it went ahead anyway.
intresting.
Regards Richard.

Hi
Interesting..........very........... have you tried contacting either ITV or whatever Associated Rediffusion has morphed into these days....its a long shot though as an awful lot of b/w stuff has disappeared into the ether sadly.
Good luck nevertheless

Suzi

I rang the British Film Institute. There were apparently 12 programmes. They have some 35mm footage of two of them - a programme about cats, and another about TV in schools. That's it.

Apparently it's unlikely that the others would be in any official collection, so it's a case of hoping that something will turn up, I suppose.

Thanks Richard, Suzi and Robert,
Does any other film buff or historian know anything more?
Further, does anyone know if Farson's TV TIMES article "On The Trail Of Jack The Ripper" of November 7th, 1959 incorporated a public request for JTR information from viewers?
