It has long been believed that the term 'Jack the Ripper' was first used in the 27th Sept 'Dear Boss' letter. I recently read Edwin T. Woodhall's 'Jack the Ripper or When London Walked in Terror' in which the author claims to have read an earlier correspondence. The postcard, which reached a news agency shortly after the 9th Sept, alledgedly read,
I'm not an alien maniac
Nor yet a foreign tripper
I'm just your jolly, lively friend,
Yours truly - Jack the Ripper.
P.S. Look out next time. I'm doing the job
more perfect.

Is the any substance in Woodhall's claim?

Well, if that letter ever existed it isn't currently in any files we have access to. Some items got pilfered by trophy hunters, so it could conceivably have been taken by someone. I lean toward believing it either was invented up or had a different date. I've not seen Woodhall's book, but it is reportedly full of very strange and bizarre errors.
