Has anybody visited the arches(if they still exist) where this body was found? was it spooky. perhaps tramps live there now preventing any visitors. Are there any photos of the place?

Check this website under Victorian London: Whitechapel Then and Now. There is also a thread under "Victims" on this message board.

Cheers!

I was there just a week or so ago. The arches now all have locked gates on them and are mostly used for storage or small business premises. However with a tall warehouse on the other side of the road which was also there at the time, this is probably one of the locations which at least looks very similar to how it did at the time of the murders.

Alan,

Could you give some precise directions. I'm planning to be in London next month.

The best thing to do is to go to Pinchin Street directly after Berner Street. If you head along Commercial Road you will find the street sign reads "Henriques Street, formerly Berner Street". The site of Dutfields Yard is now in the yard of a school on the corner (incidentally can anyone tell me if the big building opposite is the original board school or a newer building standing on the site?). At the school turn right into Fairclough Street, then at the end turn left into Backchurch Lane. Keep going until you see the railway bridge, and there is a turning on the left just before the bridge. This is Pinchin Street, and you will see the arches curving away on the right hand side of the street.

While I'm in a photo posting mood (see Recent Ripper Walks thread) here is a photo I took of the arches in Pinchin Street while I was there.

Alan:
But did you check out the contents of that dumpster on the sidewalk while you were there? It is certainly big enough to hold a Gladstone bag. Or maybe the rest of the torso.

Great shot, by the way,
Mark Starr
