Monty,

That was your article in the September Ripperologist 'Plaque Unveiled to the Elephant Man in Leicester' wasn't it?
Your name threw me off.

Hi Nina

We might have to chain Monty to the comfy chair in that back street in Leicester listening to Dan Leno while contemplating Merrick's plaque.

Hi Monty

Thanks for that sidelight on the current situation today near John Merrick's birth site in Lee Street, Leicester. In this modern world, who knows what might have occurred. sad

All my best

Robert,

No fair! That means the chances of me watching you in that particular scenario are about as slim as Pompey beating Southampton in the FA cup! And I have been so looking forward to some new entertainment (I'm out of movies, folks).

Monty,

Hope, as you say, that the police tape was not for anything serious..

Bestest,

Lyn

Chris,
You bring the comfy chair and I'll bring the chains (only because they are lighter to carry).

Monty,
Any update on the police tape incident? I too hope it was not anything serious.

Hi Monty, Nina, and Lynn

I regularly monitor the news from my home city of Liverpool, and I have to say the day-to-day news has me heartily distressed and sickened. News today of a children's playground in the Dingle, close to where Ringo grew up, that had been renovated, opened one day and destroyed by vandals the next. See
http://icliverpool.icnetwork.co.uk/0100news/0100regionalnews/tm_objectid=14978405%26method=full%26siteid=50061%26headline=opened%2don%2dthursday%2d%2ddestroyed%2don%2dfriday-name_page.html

I'm afraid that almost daily there are reports of shootings, bombings, and other ugly incidents. It is not the Liverpool I knew when I was growing up in the Fifties and Sixties. And Liverpool has been just named the Capital of Culture for Europe for 2008. . . sad

All the best

Chris

I played Carr Gomm (one of the doctors) in a stage production of The Elephant Man six or seven years ago, and did quite a bit of background reading about Merrick.

As a long-standing student of the Ripper crimes even then, it was natural to ask oneself the question - "Well?"

But I concluded there was no possibility of poor Joseph Merrick as JtR. Given the degree of prejudice at the time, I am surprised more fingers weren't pointed at him though.

In my view, a non-starter as a theory.

Phil
