UNIVERSITY INTELLIGENCE.

__________

CAMBRIDGE, JAN. 28.

There was a Congregation this morning for the purpose of admitting to their degrees those who had obtained honours in the Mathematical, Historical, Moral Sciences, Natural Sciences, Law, and Theological Triposes. The Senate-house was crowded. Admission was by ticket, except for members of the Senate and undergraduates, who filled the galleries as soon as the doors were opened, half an hour previous to the commencement of the ceremony. The interval before the Vice-Chancellor entered, accompanied by the Esquire Bedells, was enlivened by the undergraduates, who expressed their approbation or displeasure as the more prominent members of the University took their places. The preliminary proceedings, which consist in reading the supplicats of the various candidates for degrees by the Senior Proctor, was, as usual, much interrupted; but when this preliminary was ended it was evident that by preconceived arrangement a more than usually hearty welcome awaited the Senior Wrangler, who, on being presented by the Praelector of his college to the Vice-Chancellor, was greeted with the most unanimous and deafening plaudits. Similar honours were paid to other recipients of degrees, whose claims to the distinction rested, not only on their success in the examinations, but also on the distinguished part they have taken as boating men, cricketers, or athletes. The last of the Junior Optimes, Mr. Morley, of Clare, was presented with a "wooden spoon," most elaborately decorated. On one side were the college arms; on the reverse a "sunflower;" and underneath the words "Quite too utter." This was lowered from the galleries, and Mr. Morley, fully appreciating the humour which prompted the gift of the gaudy memento of his place in the Tripos, cut the cord by which it was suspended and carried it off amid uproarious merriment. It may be interesting to know that, according to the University Calendar, the number of Senior Wranglers has been 136. St. John's College has been the most successful, having secured the honour 47 times; Trinity, 35; Caius, 13; St. Peter's, 8; Pembroke, 5; Christ's, 5; St. Catharine's, 3; Queens, 8; Magdalene, 3; Sidney, 2; Corpus Christi, 3; while Jesus, Clare, Trinity Hall, and Emmanuel have each carried off the honour once. No member of King's or Downing has ever been Senior Wrangler. This may be accounted for in the case of King's, by the fact that the members of that college did not compete for honours until quite recently, while Downing was not founded till 1800, and for some years the number of students was very small.

All those whose names appeared in the Mathematical Tripos list, published in The Times on Saturday, were admitted to the degree of B.A., as also the following who had obtained honours in the undermentioned Triposes:-
