CRICKET

Eton v Winchester

Great interest was taken in this match yesterday at Winchester, and many old Etonians and Wykehamists were observed among the company assembled to witness it. Just half a century has elapsed since these Colleges first met to contend for the honour of victory, and during that time Eton has won 30 matches, Winchester 14, one resulted in a tie, and one was left unfinished. Mr. Forbes won the toss and decided upon sending Eton in. So free was the hitting that upon the fall of the fifth wicket 136 runs were registered. The remaining five brought up the total to 240. At 5.15 the Wykehamists sent in Messrs. Baines and Thornton, opposed to Messrs. W. Forbes and Smith. It proved to be an indifferent start, as two wickets fell for four runs, three for seven, four for 17, and seven for 45. At this stage the stumps were drawn for the day.
