It has been known for some time that Ostrog was listed in the 1881 census under the name of Michael Ostrog as a prisoner at Portland Prison in Dorset. However I had so far been unable to trace any official record of him in the 1871 census. It was known that he would at that time have been in prison as in 1866 he was sentenced to 7 years' imprisonment and was realesed in 1873 but I had not been able to trace where he was held in prison.
However, I have now found him listed in the 1871 census data under his alternative name of Bertrand Ashley. This lists him as serving his time in Dartmoor Convict Prison in Devon. The information given is as follows:
Name: Bertrand Ashley
Prison Number: 8791
Status: Convict Inmate
Marital Status: Unmarried
Age: 35
Occupation: Nil
Place of Birth: Russia

The generally accepted date of his birth is circa 1833. If the age given in 1871 is correct, it means his year of birth would be 1836.

Congratulations Chris. I only hope they searched him before they released him.
