For my own purposes I am currently transcribing details for the returns in the 1891 census for the District London County Asylum, Friern Barnet, i.e. Colney Hatch.
The lunatic inmates are only referred to by initial but return also provides marital status, age and trade. There are approx 2,500 listed so this will take a week or so. I am listing this in MS Excel and when it is done, if anyone wants a copy let me know.
I am listing the first couple of pages below is csv format so you can see what is listed.
Under Marital Status column, S-single, m-married, w-widowed.
UK in any column means Unknown

Found this cutting today about a disastrous fire at Colney Hatch asylum in 1903. This piece is from the Bluefield Daily Telegraph, 23 January 1903. Interesting in this piece is that there was a special Jewish wing at the asylum which is where the fire occurred

Thanks for posting that, Chris. Very sad, and also amazing that it hasn't left a mark on the collective memory.

Amazing place too - surgeons and charwomen, rich and poor, men and women, young and old, Jews and Gentiles all under one roof!

I have recently discovered that my great grandfather was an inmate in 1924. He was jewish - does anyone know if in 1924 the jewish wing still existed at the hospital? Are there any accessible records for that year or a few years prior or are they all protected still?

I am trying to trace details for Philip Henry Cave who died at the Colney Hatch Asylum on 7th October 1912. Does anyone know if the records of patients/inmates still exists and if it is possible to access them?
