Has anybody ever looked into a man named James Henry, who was identified as having been carrying a knife before the murder of Annie Chapman.

He was identified by Thomas Ede (later it seems in the inquest his name is reported as William Eade). Ede (Eade) actually gave his testimony during the Nichols inquest, but he was talking about the Sept 8 murder of Chapman.

At any rate, several people saw him with a knife, but it was later determined that he was a harmless lunatic (harmless lunatic??? - hmmm).

Anyways I found it in the Ultimate JTR Companion.

Tim

Hi Tim
There is also a write up about James in the A-Z according to Ede he wore a two peaked cap and, Ede thought, had four inches of knife blade prtruding from his pocket. He moves oddly and seemed to have a woman arm. Ede was shown James (presumably in some kind of line up) and as he was a "well known harmless local lunatic" Ede's sighting was not pursued.
Hope this helps
Chris

A harmless lunatic with a knife?? Interesting. Just because he may have started off as harmless, it doesn't mean that he remained harmless so I wonder why the police didn't think to question him.

I always find the word lunatic interesting as it originally came about by the popular belief that the phases of the moon effected people's minds and made some people become crazy or become a 'lunatic'.

OOps
I should have said in previous post he seemed to have a wooden arm, not a woman arm!
the date of the incident was 8th September
Chris

The date was Sept 8th, before the murder of Chapman. What is the significance Monty?

Supposedly, for people total saw him with a knife, and he started moving quickly away and soon disappeared when he was pursued.

Apparently, nothing else about this man or this incident was taken seriously.

Tim
